What's up Wednesday and The Kindness Project

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme, started by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk, that helps readers and writers touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up. Join by visiting their blogs and signing in on the widget.

What I'm Reading
Finished up Will Sparrow's Road over the weekend and loved it! Ordered some used books last week and am awaiting their arrival.

What I'm Writing
So close to being finished with my revisions I can taste it. Also working on an article for work. Maybe I can finish it all this week? Maybe not. We will see

What Inspires Me Right Now
I went bug collecting with my boys this weekend. We had the best time. We are waiting none too patiently for the cicadas to emerge in Connecticut. I hope, hope, hope there will be some in my backyard.

And I have not officially announced that I'm pregnant on the blog... but I am. Yay! I'm expecting a girl at the end of the summer and have enjoyed being inspired by her already.

What Else I've Been Up To
I'm also posting today over at The Kindness Project. I saw this story last week about some inappropriate comments thrown online at a Sufi woman. Jezebel has good coverage of the story here. The response from the woman and the subsequent apology restored my faith in humanity. You can read my full post at The Kindness Project website.

So what have you been up to lately?

  1. Congrats on your announcement!

And from a few states south, I can say that I *think* the cicadas will be here soon. My husband spotted a shell yesterday at work.

  2. Aww, congrats on the baby news! That is an adorable picture :)

Yay for being close to the revision finish line--that is not an easy race (marathon?) to finish!

    1. Thanks Rebecca- that's us on Mother's Day. The boys are super excited about having a little sister. And yes, you are right, marathon is the word (though the most I've ever run is a 10K... and that was my upper limit. I can't imagine an actual marathon! Yikes!)

  3. Okay, first off: CONGRATULATIONS! That's so exciting. And this is the first girl, I assume? So much fun. :-) Also awesome that you're nearing the end of your revisions. You'll have to celebrate once you cross that finish line.

Just went and read the Jezebel and Kindness Project articles and all I can say is, "Wow!" My faith in humanity is always restored when I encounter stories like that one. Thanks for sharing it with us.

    1. Thanks Jaime and yes, first girl. We are all really, really excited. I need an injection of estrogen around here. I think I will celebrate with a popsicle when I finish! So glad you liked the Jezebel/Kindness post. Amazing, no? She really inspired me.

  4. Congratulations Kat!!! I hope the rest of the pregnancy goes well for you. :D

It's cool that you can share your fascination for insects with your kids. I suppose, going by the stereotype, it helps that they're boys... though I can't say I ever really held much of an interest in bugs. :)

    1. Yay, thanks Colin! I think it will go well. All fine so far. :0)
The boys and I do like to collect bugs together, and I've been thinking about that stereotype lately-- it will be tough if our new addition doesn't like creepy crawlies. But, we'll get over it. And-- I hear what you're saying, I don't fit the stereotype either... so maybe it's all bunk?

I also loved your Kindness Project post today. I read about that story last week, and then told my husband about it the other day. It's very enlightening and moving. Thank you for spreading the word about acceptance.

    1. I know! I can't imagine what it's like to have a girl and I CAN'T WAIT!!! We've gotten some awesome hand-me-downs (yay!) from friends, and I can say the clothes are MUCH better than typical boy fare. Thanks for the compliments, too. I'm feeling great and was SO happy when we took that pic. It was mother's day and we were just about to go out for breakfast. YUM.
Glad you liked the kindness post, too. How amazing is she? Loved it.

I remember reading about that Reddit controversy last year and Balpreet's calm response. But I hadn't known that the person who posted the photo later apologized. That's great.

Glad you liked Will Sparrow. (I still picture Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp when I hear that title.)
