Listen up!

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This Week's Topic:
If you got to choose a celebrity narrator for the audio book of your WIP or your favorite novel, who would it be and why?

I am in the middle of a new WIP that I'm obsessing over. It's told in alternate POVs, a pair of twins. I think of their dad as Michael Madsen (maybe I'm just spending too much time thinking about Michael Masden). I love his gritty voice.

But here's the thing: I have NO idea about younger actors and actresses. I watch just a couple of shows (Glee and Dr. Who) and very seldom see movies that aren't intended for the 7 and under set. Any actor I could think of would be in their thirties at least (or British).

Lend me a hand blogiverse: who are some scratchy-voiced young actors?

Help me voice-cast my characters, Lena (girl) and Nile (boy). They're seventeen, and here's where they live.

Any ideas? Put them in the comments!

  1. Oooh, I love Michael Madsen!

Hmm, scratchy voiced males...I know I know one, but his name is eluding me at the moment (need caffeine). If I think of it I'll come back and tell you! :)

  2. Scratchy voices? Hmm, I have to think on the male, but for the female twin- what about Sophia Bush from One Tree Hill? OR there's this girl who was in Step Up 2 (I think) and she had scratchy voice, too. Like Debra, I know there are several scratchy voice males, just can't put my finger on one...

  3. For scratchy voice female, go with the chick from Step Up 2. I think her name begins with a B.

I stink with actor names. LOL

  4. I'm at a loss on ideas for young actors also, but I like the idea of a young scratchy voice...that sounds cool.

  5. Haily on American Idol this season has a scratchy singing voice. Does your young scratchy voice character sing?

  6. Hm, I'm drawing a blank on scratchy voiced males, though I know there are some I'm not thinking of. For girls, I always think of Emma Stone or Mila Kunis as have scratchy voices.

  7. Michael has the BEST and most distinctive voice. He'd be great.

And ummm basically see my post for recommendations for you :) Seems like we were going for similar things!

  8. That's a great question with who should narrate! I love Anthony Hopkin's voice. But I don't really know young actors either, so I'm at a loss as who could play yours. You could prolly even google young actors with scratchy voices. lol!

  9. I loved Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit, and Jake Abel from Percy Jackson. They both have great scratchy voices.

And can I just say that I already love this book of yours? Anything set in the desert is an automatic win for me. :)

  10. P.S. I just read your story on Smith and really liked it! I love that you referred to the man as just The German. It makes him mysterious and interesting. Not like that punk Allan. ;)

  11. I know Debra- they're out there... I just need to pay attention.

thanks Quita and Alicia- Step up 2- will have to check that out.

Jennifer- it works well with the desert theme.

Okay, kate- LOL. it's kinda post apocalyptic, so not a lot singing. Though a post apocalyptic musical... that could be pretty awesome.

    Thanks Tracy- great idea.

Yes, Sarah- yours were right on target!

Pk- funny. I did try "husky voice actors" and cringed a little with nerves at what might pop up. There were some, but mainly older like Demi Moore and Kathleen Turner.

    Sarah- Emma it is.

Jess- great ideas, thank you. And so glad you're into the desert. :0)

and pt 2: very funny. Yes, The German. He really was The German (meaning I couldn't remember his name).

  12. I'm with Quita--Sophia Bush is a great choice, but I'm completely clueless for the male character...

  13. You'd think I'd be up on this - but I can't think of anyone.I only watch Glee too, but I have a tween - I should know this. This is one condundrum I will definitely stew on for a while.

  14. You should totally do a post-apocalyptic musical. THAT'S something no one has ever done. ;)

I too am ignorant of younger actors, but with a 12 yr old daughter, I think I will soon know all of them...

  15. What about the guy on Supernatural? Jensen Ackles I think? I've only seen the show once, but remember that his voice had a very grating quality.

  16. Thanks Pam, I'll check her out.

    Thanks Alison!

Maryanne-- so true! You are about to know way more than you want to about teenage actors, methinks.

Okay- thanks Megan, I don't know this guy, but I can check it out!
